Front Cover: On March 27, 1948, North Shore Line employees went on a 91-day strike over an unresolved wage dispute. Service was not restored until June 30. The strike and subsequent wage adjustments put a financial strain on the company as the North Shore also lost track rental revenue when the Chicago Transit Authority converted its Skokie shuttle rail operation to bus on March 26. Equipment sat motionless at Highwood and rust collected on the rails while negotiations dragged on. Highwood would not see such a vast array of equipment gathered in the yards again until final abandonment in January 1963. —Ken Wilkins photo, Loren Martens collection
